Mine is starting to Hemridge oil. Anyone replaced one on a 300? I have done one before on a Park Avenue, Jeep and VW Rabbit. It should be pretty stright forward, right? Anything to look out for, or just the usual becareful of the torqe on the bolts?
Best place you think to buy one.
Also, my car has a replaement motor. I was told by the shop I bought it from that it is from another 89 300. Is the engine number marked anywhere?

andyou will see the original engine and transmission serial numbers listed.
Then check the numbers stamped into the machined pad below the alternator.
I've checked this info on half a dozen cars and the numbers matched every time. I was amazed. Then again, I've had MBZ cut new keys from the VIN numerous times and the keys always worked so MBZ record keeping seems to be excellent.
If the numbers on your TE block indicate that it is a replacement, there's no way I know of to figure out what car it DID come from.
As far as changing the valve cover gasket, I recommend that you buy a new little rubber pipe that connects the cover to the head. Those pipes seem to get cooked by engine heat and will break when you try to remove them. The big pipe to the air clener top seems to survive better.
Only other thing is to be very careful about placement of the little "tongue" on the gasket that hangs down at the back of the engine and slips into the cylinder head. Get that wrong and oil will pour down the back of the engine at startup.
Thanks augapfel,
I really appreciate the heads up. I will get the little pipe as well. It started leaking a little when I switched to synthetic oil. Then I made the mistake of having the oil changed at Firestone. They told my they put synthetic but I don't think they did put in synthetic. Some what I have read by doing searches. Switching will cause some leaks until all the gaskets adjust. Switching back on forth must have made the gasket worse. Also, thanks for the pick and the location of the engine plate.
Hum, this is puzzleing. The number on what looks like the alternator bracket are 103-155. Which I can't find a corresponding engine number from Autohaus. According to them, most 300's are 103-983. I just want to make sure I get the corrected gasket. I guess I should just get from from my local foreign parts store. That way I can take off the old one and take it to them.
I just changed my valve cover gasket today. I found a Fel-Pro gasket at AutoZone for 13.99, and when I read the box, it said Made in Germany. Was an easy job and so far is dry as a bone.
103.983 *is* the designation for the 3.0L engine. AFAIK the gasket is the same for all the M103 SOHC engines so just ask for a gasket for your car. It'll be the right one.
