Trying this forum because I think most popular car with the same straight six I have will be the W124 300E (86-93ish).
I have recently purchased a 1991 300SL, the engine sounds as sweet as a nut with good oil pressure, has 92,000 miles, but on cold start up it exibits a momentary "clap clap clap" from the top end.
The only expierience i've had of this characteristic was sticking hydralic tappets on a VW.
It sounds as if the oil is taking a few seconds to circulate before this noise just disappears- I'm not overly concerned about it, but nonetheless don't like it too much!
Anyone got/have had the same problem?
Many Thanks
