Can anyone tell me how much tranny fluid should be put in a 93 400e. I know the oil asks for 8 qts but I dont think the tranny holds that much. Please let me know. thank you
It is 6-1/2 qts on mine. However, I am not sure that the trannys are the same - I6 vs. V8, but I suspect they are. If you are without the owner manual, a good parts house should be able to look up the info for you.
My 400E requires 7.7 quarts at a fluid change. I take 7.7 quarts out and put 7.7 quarts back in. The best rule is to measure what you take out and put that much back in. You must of course drain the torque converter. I have to remove a section of exhaust pipe to get at the TC drain plug - which is a pain but it's supposed to be done.
The torque converter is #5 in the schematic, between the engine and transmission pan. The torque converter needs to be manually rotated until you see the drain plug through the bottom access hole. The plug should take a 5 mm hex key.
It would be a good idea to get the transmission service procedure from the service CD or the Haynes manual - not just for the draining of the TC but also for the refill which is a bit of a trick.
The only real trick is in refilling the transmission. After everything is drained and buttoned back up, you refill with 4 liters, then start the car and slowly refill the remaining amount. I suggest refilling it half a quart low, so it can be topped off after a long hot drive.
