Questions regarding the auto-box

Hello!

I have the 722.4 auto box on my W124. I was just wondering what you guys think about manually changing the gears (e.g. D to 3 and so on). I heard that this would cause premature wear to your gearbox but I'm not so sure.. I don't do it anyway.

Sometimes I like to drive a bit quick round a series of bends. So usually I keep the gear in 3 so that the car doesn't shift into 4th gear hence having not much grunt. Would this cause premature wear too? Cux when I let off the throttle I can feel the car acting like a manual, i.e. pulling back.. I was just wondering..
What about constant soft and hard kickdowns?

I have been experiencing a bit of a hard shift on the car.. From 1st to 2nd it shifts a bit too noticeably. i.e. you can feel the car change gears.. And at times when the car is in 2nd gear (or 1st) and I let off the throttle, the car would change up to 3rd gear (or 2nd) and I would hear a clunk.

What's the problem with my box? I am just picking on it here it's nothing too bad but I am aware that some early W210s and W202s have the same 722.4 gearbox and theirs always shift a lot smoother.. No idea why..

I've had the fluid changed (incl. Torque converter) and seals changed and new filters put in about 6mths ago and the car has done around 2000km (1234mi (LOL) since)..
Any ideas?

Sorry about the amonut of questions and being long winded I just want to somehow pinpoint the problem and maybe change my habit of playing around with the box.

Cheers,
Jeff

I'll do the manual shift-down when really necessary - like passing on a two-lane road. Otherwise, I just leave it in D. I don't think you're doing too much harm unless you downshift a lot at 70+mph.

I do the same. I don't think it'll hurt the transmission. I was told that it may burn up a little oil, but that's about it.
I've also heard that the transmission adjust to your driving habits, perhaps you harsh kick downs have something to do with that.

It's a gated shifter - it was built to be shifted, per the owner's manual.

Cheers! Good to hear that my habits are not killing the box.. But it appears that none of you seem to be using the 3 and 2 gears to keep the gear and hence the revs up in the corners.. This, I do very often, as I live quite near to my favourite stretch of road!
I'm not so sure as regards to the adaptation bit. AFAIK the gearbox is mechanical, i.e. pneumatically controlled somehow.. Whereas the gearboxes that adapts are electronically controlled. I have driven my mother's cars and they sure do adapt (LOL).. It is obvious because after some hard thrashing the car would want to keep the revs up and it would shift down when you depress the pedal ever so slightly..
Anyway, cheers for the replies. Great to hear that I'm not alone!

Jeff

maybe the clunking you are hearing is caused by flex disks/or shifter bushings?

flex disk: 124 Driveline Flex Disk Kit With Instructions | MercedesSource.com
bushings: Auto Transmission Shift Bushing Kit | MercedesSource.com

Cheers mate for the reply.
I have already replaced the shift bushings cux the gear knob was real loose.
Maybe it's the flex disks.. Argh... Just when I thought my car had no problems at all... Grrr.. Ah well it's turning 13 next Christmas..

Sorry for the confusion there.
My car is a lowly E220 (M111 engine 16v) and hence the need to keep revs in the torquest range, in order to push me out of the corners. I wouldn't think a 300E would need it unless you are really "going for it".. I do that when I need to keep up with friends who drive CLK430s, S4s and S3s.. Ah well.. I don't really keep up but at least I routinely give my friend's W203 C200K (M271 engine) a good push (not literally) from behind LOL.. 200Ks are not quick at all.. Don't know if you get them in the US though!

i do this almost everytime im on the road, i feel i have more control when i use the engine to slow down, also when i feel like a bit of spirited driving i shift the gears quite eratically through the bends, its quite thrilling and you get a bit more power through the higher revs..i got a euro spec 260e 89' with 200k+ kms still going strong no porblems as of yet
