1992 300E starts, but then stalls when I try to go
I have a problem with my 1992 300E (automatic tans.) I have driven it for 30,000 miles with no engine running problems. This problem all started when I was driving home down the interstate and pulled off for snacks. When I got back into the car the first try it wouldn't start. Waited a couple of minutes and it started right up. When I went to pull out of the parking lot, the car stalled. When I tried to start it up again it started right up, but when I put it in gear and gave it gas it would stall again.
Had the car towed into a local mechanic and they told me that the car was fine and needed a tune-up. Replaced Dist. Cap, plugs, wires, battery, and fuel system cleaning (which I am sure meant adding something in the gas tank). Got the car back and it ran fine for a day. Then I drove it 2 hours to visit family, drove around town once there and no problems. Drove back 2 hours and as soon as I pulled off the ramp at the interstate it stalled on me. Started right back up, and I found that if I took my foot off the brake and let the car start moving, I could then give it gas and get going. If I went straight from brake to gas it would stall. Also I found that if I was moving and went from gas to break and then back to gas it would stall again. I am looking at replacing the fuel filter, but in reading see that the OVP might be a problem (but I have no ABS light on) any other suggestions? Fuel pump maybe? Any other electrical I should check?
You might check the Crank Position Sensor... sounds like the issue my dad was having in the SL.

Sounds like it could be a fuel distributor issue that is surfacing. M103 engine is generally ultra reliable. Could be something on the electronic side of the fuel delivery system (CIS distibutor)
Save yourself the hassles and guesswork. Have the engine plugged into a STAR computer for proper diagnosis. There are a few mercedes independents which have the diagnostic tools but you might just have to take it to a genuine MBZ workshop. I am a do it yourselfer but when it comes to fuel delivery issues there are many sensors involved and scanning the engine will quickly pinpoint the offending sensor or component. good luck and let us know what it was.
Now the car turns over, but will not start. It sounds like the fuel pump is running when the key is turned. Would the fuel distributer cause this? Also can you tell me where the fuel distributor is located? Is this what regulates the pressure of the fuel being delivered to the engine?
It sounds to me like a vacuum leak. I had a VW that did this and it was just that. Those 15 year old plastic tubes snap and crumble like they are made from sand I just discovered.
You can buy new tubing and the rubber stuff to connect it for under $10 from autohausaz.com Then just trace all of the lines and replace them until the problem stops or you notice one not connected or broken.
