Window/AC problems

Hi all, new user here, already love this place and the ideas and discussions I have been reading.

I am a new owner of a Benz, a 1993 400E.

Love the car, but two problems have recently occured, maybe someone can help me get fixed.

1. Driver side power window: Was working fine, now refuses to do anything. Its in the up/closed position, and refuses to do anything. When I hit the switch for it, all i hear is a sinlge click, but it sounds like its coming from the BACK door, or under the seat...I dont hear the click on the driver window, its elsewhere (unless my hearing is that bad :P)

Anyone have an idea for what this might be ?
And if so, is there any DYI guides for how to ?

2. The A/C has been intermittetently working..one day its fine, other day it wont come on. Sometimes it stays on for an hour..other times 5 minutes. It always blows, but not always cold. Im making an assumption here, but I believe it may be low on freon, causing the system to shut itself off to prevent damage.

Again, is there an idea of how much it costs to recharge the system ? Do i have to get the freon converted or should it be the new type ?
Is this something that can be done by the average person without expensive a/c equipment?

Thanks all for reading this and offering your insight.

I look forward to many more great times on this forum.

Check under the hood. There should be a sticker that says R112 or R12. You can purchase an inexpensive (around $20) recharge kit at your local McParts store and try to recharge it. Beyond that, you will need gauges to determine if the system is tight or leaking.

The power windows on your car are controlled by a module. That's what gives the neat features like "close all windows using the key." I don't know where the module is located but I do know that the modules fail.

correction there under the hood. sticker will read R134A or R12. You can get the 134A most anywhere that sells parts, including WalMart and also purchase an inexpensive attachment to introduce the can into the system. R12 isn's sold over the counter anymore to mere mortals like us. You will have to go to a A/c repair facility for that.

If you don't have all the proper tools and experience for A/C work, your money will probably be best spent with a repair shop you can trust.

On your window.... check that the switch is working. Easy to remove the wood. pull up the carpet in the tray and you will find a screw that secures the tail end of the wood trim. Once that is removed, gently lift the trim to expose the window switches (they just pull out). Change the driver one with the left rear one and see if you get some action. If you do, the fix will either be a new switch or you might get lucky and use some CRC electrical cleaner. Shoot a load of it in the switch body and see if it doesn't solve the problem.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays

with the window you may need an new regulator. So if cleaning the switches doesn't work check to see if your regulator is okay

when my two rear windows failed, I too heard that click comming from underneath the middle of the car, turns out it was a burnt fuse. It's a long shot but it doesn't hurt checking.

Yes Jayare, you're correct R134a. I knew R112 didn't sound right....
I'm an electrical engineer and I've been seeing too many resistors lately.

Thnaks for all the great insight so far everyone!@

A few questions...

battlecat714 - What fuse did you look at to replace that fixed your window problem ? As of now, The only fuse box I have been able to find, is the large one located under the hood on the driver side by the firewall.

Jayare - when you say to remove the wood, pull up the carpet in the trey.. Do you mean the ash trey ? I got in there for a sec yesterday to have a look, and I didnt see how the center piece was able to be pulled out properly..

Any guidance will help me alot .

That's the one i'm talking about, mine had a small hairline cut in the window fuse that kept on connecting and disconnecting.

E320 power window problems

Hi all,

I have a 2000 E320 with bad power windows. This morning I lowered the window on the fron passenger side but couldn't bring it back up again by just pressing the one touch auto button. I had to press it probably 50 time for it to come up inch inch by inch. It appears that I have this problem with all my windows as well as my power sunroof.

Any insight on what the problem could be would be appreciated.

Thanks.
