I know this is kind of silly, but for the coffee/beverage drinkers, where have any of you installed cup holders? There just doesn't seem to be a "best place". Any ideas? THanks
well, as you may know by now, mbz didn't offer cupholders for a reason-- you shouldn't have such distractions, possibly dangerous when hot liquids are considered. I know the previous owner of my TE spilled many coffee's using the center console as a cup holder. My 400E had the same stains, so it is a popular place. There are cupholders for sale at performanceproducts.com and they are often shown placed on the door panel below the door handle, or, if your w124 doesn't have the center console storage box inplace of the glove box, then I have also seen people put them there as well.
Go with the safe bet and just use a beer/beverage helmet and keep it hands free.

I've seen the one on eBay installed in a car. It doesn't look great, but it's not too bad when closed either. The color matched the interior on the one I saw, and it looked kind of like a dealer installed, non-factory accessory. If you have to have a cupholder, that's one possibility.
I've been considering making a two cup holder for the center console, but I haven't actually done anything yet. It seems like it would be possible to make something that is usable with the armrest up that would look reasonably decent. I'll have to see what I can come up with.

i used to commute two hours a day for work, and really needed a cup holder. i agree with myfirstbenz about the beverage hat, but it doesn't always work for tall people. so i opted for the cup holder that PerformanceProducts sells. it actually looks a lot better than that one sold on eBay. the outside cover perfectly matches the interior of my car and the tray has a cork lining which seems to take care of any condensation from the outside of the can/bottle. i'd buy it again if i had to.
btw, i'm the only person allowed to drink in my car. never spilled a drip. and definitely no eating.
I bought one like that and installed it on the same place noted in this ad, on the door. Mine had a burlwood bottom to match the wood on the car.
Also, I cut a cork template for the bottom of the cupholder, for a little bit of traction and to absorb spillage.
There were two disadvantages though.
The ring isn't adjustable, so it only takes standard 12 oz. coca cola can size cups.
Bigger ones won't fit, and smaller ones wobble around.
Also, being on the left door, it's awkward for a right handed person such as myself to withdraw and insert the cup, especially when the car is in motion.
That said, after having it for 10 years, it's definately a mixed blessing, not sure i would do it again with one of those if I had my choice.
Now thaqt it's in, it's in, so I am content to live with it. With the device closed, the burlwood matches the other wood, and it doesn't look bad on the door
