it all started about 2 months ago when i started hearing this metalic grinding noisecomming from the front of my 1989 mercedes 260e . when i bought the car the fan clutch wasnt working so i replaced it with a new one.a few days after that i started hearing this griding noise. i dint think much of it. i assumed it was the fan clutch doing its job. well 2 months later my fan started wobbling and hitting some nearby pullys. so i took it to my mechanic the next day and he told me that it was my FAN CLUTCH BEARING BRACKET. the mileage on the car is over 200 thous. he also told me that i shouldnt drive it beacuse it the bearings flew apart, it could do a lot of damage. so that night i took it home ang guess what? the fan fell off along with the fan clutch and some pully that was attached to it. the belt that wraps around all those pullys came off also. my question is whether or not this FAN CLUTCH BEARING BRACKET sounds right before i buy the parts?
thanks for reading this hopefully i can get some answers
Sounds exactly right. My wife was driving our 88 260E home and Iwas standing outside. I could hear the car soming a block away and thought "OMG what the hell is that." Imagine my horror when I saw that it was our car making the noise. The fan clutch bearing bracket was about 2 seconds from flying apart and that would have wiped out the brand new radiator. When i loosened the serp belt the fan just dropped. See the carnage:
My car had about 160k miles on it when that thing failed. I figured i better replace the other 2 idlers at the same time. How far away could their failures be? There's one small pulley directly above the alternator and another that is part of the belt tensioner. Think about it...
