Fog light replacement

A friend asked me to help change the fog lights on a 1993 400E. I couldn't figure out how to remove the bulb cover, and the manual wasn't helpful. Does anyone have instructions or a diagram?

Open Hood and detach Tubing from Air Box

Remove Plastic Air Scoops from rear of Headlamp Unit

Remove Rear Cover from Headlamp Unit (secures with two metal clips).

Using Flashlight Identify location of Foglamp Bulb, it is secured with a metal clip.

Push the two arms of the clip together and pull away from the fixture. This will allow you to then remove the bulb.

Its dark, and its cold. But I'd be more than happy to take a photo in the morning to explain the process.

thanks -- that would be great. i got as far as removing the plastic air scoops, but couldn't locate the metal clips.

i've changed the headlights before, and those were much easier to figure out...

Back in a minute

Five

The white woven cable is the plug to the fog lamp bulb (H3). It will probably be quite yellow at this point.

Eliot, thanks so much for those pictures -- but, unfortunately, you have a '94 and the car I'm trying to work on is a '93. They have different headlight assemblies, so the back of the lights on my friend's 400E isn't like the ones you've posted above...

Is there anyone out there with a first-gen w124 who can help out???

doesn't the fog light have it's own separate cover?

from the back, there is no cover. once i remove the plastic air scoops, the back of the headlight assembly is exposed. for the main headlight, it's a simple plastic clip -- you press the sides of the clip together, and the bulb socket slides out; then you just remove the old bulb, pop in the new one, clip everything back into place, and you're done.

but for the foglight, there's no corresponding plastic clip -- it's a different fastener, and i've tried pulling it, pushing it, whatever, and it didn't budge. i wish i had pictures, but the car isn't mine so i can't just run downstairs with my camera...

this should definitely be a DIY thing; i'm surprised the manual doesn't really cover it...
