91 300E. when the car is in nuteral or park its fine only when the car is in drive or reverse(under load) there is a rattle. always there, but when i give it very little gas and bring the revs up ever so lightly the rattly stops. what could it be any ideas, and has anybody ever head or seen this before. its more annoying then anything, and i dont think is a perfomance or maintenence issue. im thinking like a loose something or other. any ideas?
Sounds like the problem I just had fixed. Engine mounts and/or tranny mount. Most likely engine mounts. Do a search on the forums. Lots of posts regarding your issue.
It could also be your cat. converter. Mine had an odd "rattle" sound that would go away as soon as I gave the car any gas at all. In my case, it was the converter.
Maybe its not the cat. I had mine rattling fixed this morning. It turns out to be the bracket/buffer which hold the muffler together. Mine got to loose even if its fully tight. So i had to remove it. My muffler is still mounted using the rest of the brackets. I though also it could be the cat, but when the ASE Muffler tech look at it the bracket started to rattle. This bracket is not mounted to the car, it just hold the twin pipes in place with a bold in the middle.
my muffler did this too however my problem was in the very back.
They normally are held on there with a rubber o-ring (a heavy duty one) but it wasn't doing the job. I had the guy just solder the pieces together so there was no more problem. Worked like a charm.

the car does run a little rough, you can feel it. also i donno if its the exhaust as i removed the resonator and installed new piping and aa new muffler, although it can still be the cat. but im leaning more towards the engine mounts as they have never been changed, it had 17k and it is running a little rough. what you think?
It could also be the steering damper, the shock absorber looking thing in front of the thermostat housing. With the engine running, press down on it with a screwdriver or stick to see if the rattle stops.
The steering damper is located under the car and is not your rattle problem. What GLD is referring to is the belt tensioner shock absorber. It is located exactly where stated above. Only the very upper most part the shock is visible. Very possible that the bushing in the upper part has worn out. Happened to me.
