The mixture adjustment should have been tamper poof for this reason. Take the car to a Mercedes mechanic and have it adjusted before you have to spend real money.
Sorry for the real advice, but other than swapping a couple parts you should not have played with the mixture. If the mixture is adjusted improperly it will cause hard starting, especially cold starts.
You can check the fuse in the overvoltage relay located behind the battery beside the engine control and abs control units.
Good luck, but still have the mixture corrected.

Rich, you sound like you have a burr in your saddle... relax, and read my original post: the mixture screw was screwed with (pardon the pun) prior to my purchasing the car.... I've ALWAYS worked on my own cars whenever possible, and internet forums such as this have proven invaluable (learning to sort through the BS is another skillful art...). I am not afraid to learn somthing new, and am happy to have learned how to use the Duty Cycle feature of a multi meter...
