What to expect from a 400E or E420...

As some of you from MBworld.org know ... My 1990 W124 got totalled last thursday in a car accident which I got rear ended in. More information can be found here ...

http://forums.mbworld.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=160278

Anyways - I would like to know what I should expect from purchasing a used W124 400E or E420. I'm in the market for another one and have found some for very good deals.

What are the normal fix-it problems the car has and at what mileage? Also if there is anything else I should know - please let me know. I'm familiar with the M103 but the 400's is entirely new to me.

Thanks in advance!

- Chris

Chris,

I just got mine recently. The engine harness, and a/c evap are the big problems. No head gasket problem on this bad boy. This car really moves from 60-80. Change the diff to 2.82 and you'll really pick up speed fast. Leather was stock from factory and so was burlwood interior. I lowered mine with Vogtland springs and AMG shocks. I'm sure you already know the differences in the 400e and e420. Engines are the same. Distributor caps and rotors under the caps should be checked. Not too bad to replace though. Everything else is just standard maintaince.

Chris! These cars are the nuts man!! I have not stopped smilin since I bought Bigblue! When the time comes that you want to get around some slowpoke or show the ricers where the bear crapped in the buckwheat ! that puppy will walk the dog friend! I have drivin the sixes and don't get me wrong they are a great motor ! but when that bad boy drops down a gear ! hangon yer going for a ride ! Even with the stock pipes there is that nice mean low growl that says theres's a V8 coming! The best part I like is the the 22to25 MPG ! 275 horse and 25 mpg don't gt much better! Did I mention that the motor is butter smooth!!!!!!!!

something about oil drain pipes in the heads.

go do a search on mercedes shop dot com.

then all the 124 problems, wiring harness, evaporator and so on.

but they are real solid and get nearly the same fuel economy as the 300E.

Think you'll find engine parts WAY more expensive.

Chris, IM sorry to hear bro. I hope no one got hurt. Don't stress over it, everything happenst for a reason. It just means you'll have a fresh start on another project with even more knoledge.

I've had my 400e 92' for 5 years & love it, has enough power to get me around places, but if I had the money to get a 500e I would in a heart beat. Good luck buddy & if you need any help let me know.

Hey Albert,

Can you share your thoughts with me about your car. Also anything you have come across while your ownership. Such as any repairs, fixes and etc?

Knew I can count on ya!

The 400's are cool cars, they are a step lower then the 500e, & it doesn't take much to catch up to those suckers get a 2.82 rear end (maby LSD), a chip, & you're running with the sheeps. The only problem I had was my tranny, but I think that was more of my fault then the car its self. I've done a major service on it, but haven't had time to change the wireing harness (which I've heard helps a lot). Taking care of the car is a little expensive, but only when you reach the major service, everything else is the typical service. I changed the Caps, rotors, wires, gaskets & some other small tihngs to do. But overall from owning 3 w124's (2- 300E's, 1- E320) & my car for over 5 years, I love it. Again, you should expect to do some repair work because these cars are 12-14years old.
