Just thinking out loud I suppose. Wouldn't it be fun to drive a 'stick' W124 500E? Does anybody know of a place/mechanic in CA who has expertise in converting the transmission of the 500E to a manual transmission? Any idea on the price? Renntech used to advertise it (although they're in the East) but somehow stopped it. Also read in a forum posting about a guy in MN??. Would love to read your comments about this idea?
We are working on this problem on another forum and in our shop. Right now the problems consist of building a bell housing to hold the clutch assembly and getting a CNC flywheel that will be both strong enough and does not cost $2000 which is the current low cost bid.
Neither problem is over the top as far as engineering is concerned and we have a drivetrain out of a car to make the work go much easier on testing. Our shop anticipates that we will have a solution by mid fall. Right now we are looking at hanging a Corvette ZF 6 Speed tranny off the backend which will give two overdrives and a real bump in both topend and gas mileage when on the road. It is also very available and inexpensive and pretty bulletproof.
