Hi--don't be disheartened; as you've stated, that's pretty darn good for two years of ownership. I relayed to Jayare in a pm that my car got A LOT better after I connected the "disconnected" air temp sensor (quite embarassing, really...), and richened up the mixture a bit (after I leaned it way out....). I will still do the obvious things such as new wires, fuel filters, cap, rotor, etc., but the most important thing first and foremost will be to get the mixture perfect--that means I'll have to buy a new multi meter (mine apparently doesn't have a duty cycle feature).
I am also really considering new injectors (thanks for the suggestion, Nick). This car is really growing on me (the lines have always been quite pleasant to me), and I don't mind refining her until she as as sharp as a blade... Yeah, an M119 power plant would be nice in her, but a 24v inline 6 is pretty darned good! Besides, I can smoke my 540i's wheels to my heart's content if I need a fix (and she's a 6-speed... lol!) ...
So it looks like I have some large expenses to come at me but I have sunk to much money and time into this car just to give up and sell. I love the design, the class and overall I think that with time and help and can have this thing running like new again for years to come. Even at its age now I still get complements on this car. I don't get that with the 99 540i or 2001 Sebring convertible.
I'm into my baby for about $3500 in one year but I have replaced so much I might as well just have a new car. My entire rear end is rebuilt, my engine has been rebuilt, most of the items in the engine compartment have been replaced so I look at it like a couple more fixes and she might run good for another couple year without much maintenance. It has been 3 months since my last repair and honestly I haven't had any problems. There are a couple things I know about but whatever i'll get them fixed. I might even buy a 2nd 300E with some engine issues and rebuild the sucker for some external power like Super Charger or Turbo.
Anyway we'll see what happens.

Very interesting thread. Got a question. My 91 300TE has similar symptoms as your car. When its cold it starts first go, when its warm/hot first crank it starts then dies. Second time will start but for about 5 seconds it will cough and splutter then settle down to a smooth idle. Take off is a bit sluggish, and has a rhythmic surge in acceleration. Feels like its choking on something.
I have an 89 300TE with over 400,000kms, just to see the difference between the cars dad and I did and acceleration test to 100km/h on a highway and the older car just took off. Therefore I know something is up with my car.
Did u have a similar issue with the rhythmic surging that the o2 sensor fixed?
