Combo Switch 95 E420

Well it looks like my combo sw has taken a dump!!! I have no low beams on the headlites! Has anyone here ever replaced one one of these things? Looks like I can get a after market sw for about $125 . I am fairly good just enough to make me dangerous mech. Is this a DIY job or should I let the experts do it ! I shot some WD40 into the works and the low beams did come on ! But I saw just a wisp of smoke sort of like hot WD40 and now sw no work no mo!! Tempted to try some contact cleaner and see if that might help? I await your words of wisdom!!

Maybe the relay or fuse are going or have a poor connection. I just replaced a relay box -high -low -blinker - combo relays $55. Can you get a momentary wiggly contact out of it ? Are just a few thing in-op. or the whole smear ?

The same thing happened to my 88 260E -- lost the low beams. I replaced the switch with a new part and the job is kind of a pain. Removing the 10mm allen screw that secures the steering wheel to the column is H A R D! I don't know what the torque spec is but that screw is tight. You will definitely need a 1/2" drive breaker bar and extension. I ended up using a Snap-On 3/8" allen drive with a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter. I was outside the car with the door open, on my knees, pulling on that breaker bar with all my strength before it "popped." Ugly. Then theres the hassle of removing the dash lower trim panel. After those two things it's smooth sailing.

I have had the wheel off when I got my new one . I used a air wrench with the allen wrench and it popped right off ! In fact the wheel almost fell in my lap! The other part has me worried! Hey thanks for the tips though! Going to try some sort of contact cleaner today! I think the contacts are either dirty or just plain wore out! try cleanin first! Let ya know how it comes out!

Pardon my ignorance but why does the steering wheel need to come off to replace the rotary (park, low, fog) light switch?

Well I went out and pulled off the little cap that goes over the combo stalk and shot some brake cleaner into the switch area! Really gave it a blasting! The stalk felt much better ! nice clean click when moved from hi to lo and the best part was the low beams came on and would click off and on ! Now not sure how long it will hold last guess just have to cross me fingers!! Sergio ! We are talking about the combo sw which is your wiper dir sig and headlite dimmer! need to pull wheel to get to it!

Smokie,

Try some CRC electrical contact cleaner. I used it on my window switches (which seemed dead from time to time) and they are now perfect.
