I don't think starting in 3 is bad for the engine at all and in fact, if the engine strains less, it would be better. In fact, I think the shifter is notched the way it is to make that easy to do. Those parents may know a thing or to....

I think you should clean the car up and sell it to someone who would be satisfied with the performance it has assuming it is functioning properly and buy yourself a car with a V8. It will be less expensive than trying to get significant performance gains out of that car.

Don't the 94-95's already start in first gear? I'm with NickCR. Check the basics like clogged air or fuel filters. Or maybe the injectors or exhaust. While it's no V8 my E320 is one of the fastest cars I've owned. Of course "if you can't go fast with 90hp, 900hp won't help you."

2nd position is for driving under maximum load in vehicle,in mountains and when you drive with heavy weight in car or behind car on uphill roads.3rd position is for a little bit smaller up and down hill roads,in 3rd,when you are on downhill road, engine will brake your vehicle,so you can drive without pushing brakes (not for "MAD MAX"),I MEAN some normal speed. In 4th (only for 5 speed automatic) you have maximum power for high speed.
To resume: in 2nd you have more power on lower speed,3rd is a compromise and in 4th you have more power on high speed(more rpms).
