When I try and activate my fog lights by pulling on the light switch, the knob just pulls off the switch. Am I doing something wrong? The switch was just recently changed by the previous owner, so I doubt its the switch itself.
Could the knob itself be worn out and need replacing?
The headlights must be turned on in order to get the fog light part of the switch to "stay out." If you do have the headlights turned on and the knob pulls off before the fog lights turn on then, yes, you do need a new knob.
im really amused by the poseurs who light up their foglights on the clearest of nights. usually in the luxury cars. and usually with rear foglights as well, so they look like they are braking the entire time they are driving.

Yes, my wife knows exactly what's up when I say "boy is it ever foggy out there." Some clown is driving around on a clear night with his fog lights on imagining how cool his ride looks. If he has some technical ability he may even have performed some wiring mods so he can run fog lights with the headlights off. Yee haw.
you may notice that if your foglights are on, they fill in an area around the bottom of the headlight's illuminated area.
i use the foglights in the daytime because it makes me more noticeable to people who don't seem to notice other cars while driving. by that i mean accident avoidance. i would drive with parking lights only, but in the great state of california, it is illegal to drive with only parking lights on.
i always figure, more light is better at night, whether it is yellow or not, and my 86 doesn't have a rear foglight so i don't look like im on the brakes with one bulb out.
