RE: Looking at 93 400E

You Carfaxed it yet? (yes, I know, Carfax isn't a catchall, but it does periodically show rollbacks and accidents that you wouldn't otherwise know about) I have an account if you have the VIN.

Price is very very good, btw, presuming all is well. I looked at a 93 with 89k miles and the dealer wanted $8500 (later dropped it to $8k, sold it, I think, for around $7k). It was in clean condition, had a few scratches inside and out.

RE: Looking at 93 400E

Buy Buy Buy, you will never regret that power on control, i know i miss it every time i drive my m103. I ran Mobil 1 in my 400E and it seemed to like it, I got 26mpg at 80mph, i had royal purple in the rear end too, it was like greased light'nin.

I have a wholesale connection for parts, and I had to replace the harness on my 400E, If you want to replace it let me know how much you might have to pay and I could probably get it for a much better price for you. I believe i paid 1/3 of dealer price.

RE: Looking at 93 400E

First Benz, thanks for the 411 on the wiring harness. This one seems to be fine, but I guess you never know. I was supposed to seal the deal today, but the guy is opening a new restaurant in SF, and something came up, so I have to wait a day or so. So what weight of Mobil 1 did you run in yours? Do you recommend changing the rear end fluid too?

I ran 15-50 in the hot summer and 10-40 in the winter... I changed the rear end fluid just to make sure it was fresh, wasn't expensive, so what the heck, always nice to know your fluids are clean.

If you feel like doing any mods, removing the center resonator and replacing the rear muffler with a magnaflow or flowmaster is the sweetest sound in the world with the m119 V8 and it is not offensive or annoying like putting cherrybombs on a camaro. Smooth and throaty power chords!

RE: Looking at 93 400E

Today I went to close the deal on this 400E. I get there and the guy has just taken it out of the garage for the first time since I drove it over a week ago. It idled rough, and the check engine light came on. I let it warm up, took it for a spin. Although the idle smoothed out some, it did not run like it did last week, and the CEL stayed on. Wouldn't this be emmissions-related? He's only had the car since August, and it passed smog fine then. I poked around under the hood checking for bad wiring harness, couldn't really find any flaking wires. Car seems to be missing, like a slight shudder when it revs up. The last record I can find show a MBZ B service at 70,000miles. It has 94K now. They put in new plugs then, but no record of caps and rotors.

Smokie, Firstbenz, what do you think? Something simple, or a problem to stay away from? I could probably offer low, say $5k or so and get it. By the way, he paid $7800 for it last August. and has only put 4000 miles on it.

I think I would "honor" the light and have your favorite mechanic check the engine . . .

RE: Looking at 93 400E

Get this 400E checked out before you buy. It could be anything...and these V8's can be expensive (well any car can be expensive if its got problems)

RE: Looking at 93 400E

Ok ! Sounds like you might have the same problem I had! I changed both dist caps and rotors treated it to a new set of plugs ! Problem solved! Not saying for sure thats whats wrong with the car! but if it has the orig caps and rotors it could be!!!A DIY job to replace![:(!][:(!]Mine had the CEL come on for the owner the day he sold it to me ! Brought it home disconnected the bat term for about 10 min and it killed the light! Make sure if you do that you have the radio code if its got the MB radio![:0]But if you got that car with that milage on it for $5700 you stole it! I always fig when buying a used car no matter how good things look budget at least $500 for the small things that might have to be done![:0][:0] And again congrats on yer new ride![;)][;)]If like most E420 drivers gonna be a long hard time gettin that grin off yer kisser!!![:D][:D][:D]

Exactly the same story as mine! Guy was gone a week, fired it up to sell it, that day CEL on!!

RE: Looking at 93 400E

i agree that there are many possibilities, and you should have someone scan the error code to see what's up. bear in mind that this engine has two caps and two rotors, so even "just a tune-up" can get quite expensive (like around $1000 unless you DIY it).

my 400E had a problem with rough idle followed by stalling that came and went about twice a year and lasted for 3-4 days each time. it was finally diagnosed as a faulty stoplight switch. i thought that was odd, but it hasn't stalled since the part was replaced about 2 years ago...

good luck!
