After a $2,000 valve job on '91 300E @ 185,000 miles, ....

my transmission is having problems.

Shifting is not as silky smooth as before, and going from 2nd to 3rd is the worst where it is very abrupt. Anyone share the same issue?

Another problem after the valve job is that the doors lock themselves within 30 seconds of opening. My car has $600 Hofco that was installed 15 yrs ago. My mechanic blames my alarm system. AFter a month, it stopped locking itself, but now the trunk lid doesn't open along with the central lock. And when the alarm is turned off, headlights come on. I suspect something's screwed up with the fuse. I appreciate any input.

take your key and lock the boot, then unlock it but leave the key in the 12 o'clock position and remove it. go lock the car and see if the boot is too. if not take the key again and repaet but turn the key all the way to the 3 o'clock and remove, lock the car again. the boot will definatly be locked. whilst the car is locked take the key again and unlock the boot, turn the key back to 12 o'clock and remoive it. unlock the car and lock it, the boot lock should work again

i had the same problem and did this, problem solved for me!

hope this works mate
cheers

check the vacuum line to your trans..I suspect who ever did the heads screwed up when re-installing.

As for the lights w/ the alarm off, the alarm modules on these cars get funky w/ age.. I had a car that did the same thing, lights would just start blinking for no reason.. Eventually I pulled the alarm module..problem solved.

Strange w/ the door locks..I had yet to come across that problem!
Also could be the actuator for the trunk lunk that has died..

Had the same alarm problen on my Nissan. It turned out to be a bad remote. Replaced alarm remote no more problems.

Hmmm vacuum line? Do you mean there might be a bubble or something inside? I am not mechanical so I will take your idea to my mechanic that worked on the car. I put on 600 miles after the valve job, and 2nd to 3rd gear shifting abruptness is still there.

Another problem after the valve job: When I crank the engine, it clicks twice then the engine starts. It used to start smoothly. Before the valve job, my car overheated when the coolant went into the engine. After the car cooled off, I tried to start the car, and I heard some sharp metal to metal noise. Did I damage something that cause that clicking noise? After 600 miles, the sound is getting better though

Finally, I figured out reasoning behind the malfunctioning lock. That took a while. It had nothing to do with my $600 Hofco alarm.

A possible answer to your shifting problem would be that you have increased vacuum with the valve job and new gasket and are kicking more to the system. Adjust the modulator on the transmission to change the shifting. I am guessing the first shift is kicking harder and they get progressively smoother. If that is the case, do not adjust to where the first shift is smooth or the top shifts will be sliding which is not a good thing. There is a happy medium. (I think she works the boardwalk at Atlantic City).
