1987 124 300D de- turbo fy (convert to non-turbo )

I just bought a 1987 W124 300D with a bad turbo that is spraying a lot of oil . I really couldn't test drive the car . I would like to drive the car some to test out the drive train and other systems prior to investing any money into a turbocharger . Can I do it ? How ? -Thanks

Spraying oil? Uh, that isn't supposed to happen. Is the car a cream puff? If not just forget about it. If the turbo is that bad, then I will put money on the table that there is a lot more wrong with the car and that you will be sad you bought it since you will have to dump money into it. The turbos on Mercedes Diesels are as far as I know are not one of the weak parts of the car, such as a Saab or Audi Turbo. The 87 had issues with the trap oxidizer that was a warranty issue a long time ago, maybe this is related to that? did the car have its trap oxidizer changed? They fell apart and got sucked into the turbos hence the recall. The 87's are nice and quick, don't get me wrong, I have thought long and hard about getting one, but they are too much of a risk with the issues I was just talking about and not to mention that it was the first or one of the first aluminum head diesels that mercedes made, and the odds of finding a good used head these days are nill. If you must have a diesel and have a restricted budget, look to the w126 300SD or w123 300TD's. Those engines are all cast iron and are probably some of the best Diesels ever mass-produced.

oh snap! when i wrote that I forgot you had purchased the car. I doubt you can run it without the turbo like you wanted. Maybe it is just a bad seal i hope? I would make sure that thing has enough oil in it and then get a compression test done. How many miles are on it? Did you get it for a song and a dance?

my 87 300 d turbo just had recall done on trap oxidizer. New turbo, new exhaust...like $4k worth of goodies, all done under recall. 242k miles on it too. Im like the 3rd owner.

Gotta luv benz customer service..but the rest of car is a total bitch to work on...
