Brian, please don't get discouraged by the nit-pickers and nay-sayers. 99% of us are pulling for you here and admire your ambition and skill. For some reason, there is a tendency for some people on forums to assume that just because you create a thread, you are opening yourself up to their criticism and advice. They forget the manners that they would normally maintain if you were talking face to face or over the phone.
Anyway, please keep coming back and updating us on your progress!!!
So yeah... we're not discouraged at all. Just surprised at some other peoples views and opinions. Its's all good! We really appreciate all the kudos from all you positive thinking guys out there, and personally, I don't mind criticism at all. I am open minded enough to know that there is more than one way to go about doing anything, especially when building a car.
Anyways.... we are working this weekend, and I hope to post some new shots early next week. Thanks again Pete. Brian and Mike. SMAW
Hi Brian and sorry for the misinterpretation of the prior post. I certainly applaude you on the project. Absolutely it is fun and one offs are cool and unique...always creates hoopla at enthusiast events too!
I was merely stating that there are plenty of 5.0L M119 engines available from vendors, wrecking yards, Ebay and the such....if one is going through the hassle, why not just simply install a 5.0L powerplant?
Also, the 5.0L does NOT require any transmission tunnel widening. The engine is nearly the same dimension as the 4.2L.
That said, congratulations on your endeavor! It's certainly fun when it all comes together. If you need any electronic or suspension units for your conversion, by all means give us a ring...I'll try to help you out as best as possible.
Satish - it's great to see that your attention has finally focused on Sachin's parts car.
Everyone else - watch this space because this car is going to make us all weak a the knees when it's done. I really admire Brian's project as well, though I'm lucky enough to have Motorwerks as my local shop & I've seen first hand what Satish & his crew are capable of - this car will look like is rolled off of Porsche's line in 1994 - hand crafted wide arches and all.
Can't wait.
Oh, Still looking for a gen II amg bumper too... Anyone?
Between this forum and the 500 forum there are 5 different projects going right now that are all kicking pretty well. Satish in Michigan doing up the 500CE, Albert doing the Hammerwagon and his not so MellowYellow, Brian in SoCal doing the400CE and we are twisting a SixSpeed into a 500E. By Spring, or sooner, there should be some really good results for everyone to both enjoy and learn from.
This beats the OffTopic part of this forum hands down and is what it is all about.
Now, about that Japanese Supra motored 650+hp 500E. We gotta do something to beat that.

Satish, thank you for clarifying your comments. Let me clarify mine a bit. I really wanted to go 124 to 124. What I mean is... finding a rear hit 500E is hard, and it would be hard for me to destroy a driving 500E in decent shape. SL's and S500's have more gadgets than I have (or want) in my car. So we used the inside and outside harnesses from the 124/400, so that only minor wiring issues were left over. Money is always an issue too. This was/is a very cost effective build.
Time is another story. This is my car, and I don't have a backup. So of course I want back in ASAP. But my first love affair with Mercedes started years back with a friend's 1992 400E. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THAT CAR!! I wanted to buy it from hin REAL bad, but didnt have the dough when he was ready to sell. So years later when I picked up this coupe, I thought to myself, sweet car, way underpowered. Last year, when the wiring harness took a dump, we had a killer hook on this 400, and went for it.
Bottom line.... as said by someone above, next year, there's gonna be some pretty cool coupes hittin the road, on the East AND West coasts.
Sounds great. I know what you mean about the wire harnesses. Often, as we know, the ancillaries cost more than the used engine and trans! Also, I'm sure it is difficult with the car off the road if it's your primary car.
That said, looks like everything is coming together nicely! What rear end does your CE have? It MIGHT be a 3.06 with/without ASR.

Santa Monica hu, you're like 20min from where I'm at. Maby if its ok, I would love to drop by someday & check out the project. send me an e-mail, info "at" SoCalCarbon.com
Spent some (more) hours in the shop this weekend.... dropped the engine and transmission in. Fits perfect ! What tunnel widening ? Still need to connect some lines, install a few more parts, and I'm sure a bunch of other 'little' odds and ends that I have not had to think about till now... but she looks real mean with that new heart installed. A few more weeks to go before I can go get refereed by the Ca. smog mafia. I don't really want to mess with the exhaust setup until after I've been inspected, and passed... ya know... So... later for the moment... and thanks for all your guys' interest. I really appreciate it. B. Oh... almost forgot pics... I'll make another post in a minute....sorry
