Hey guys, Im new to Mercedes and am going to look at and hopefully purchase a 1988 300te wagon this friday. It has 147,000 miles, third seat, White and just the basic stuff. I know the fuel pump needs to be replaced/repaired. If I do buy it, where can I find aftermarket grille's for the w124 grille conversion, and some new wheels. And where can I find a w124 grile conversion walkthrough? Thanks for all the help.
Get a pre purchase inspection from a benz dealer or knowledgeable indie. They usually run $200 or so. They are a great cars but at that mileage it could need a new headgasket ($1000), valve guides ($500), timing chain ($500), air conditioning (thousands), motor mounts ($250), rear suspension, power steering pump, etc.
I'm not trying to dissuade you, but you should know what you are getting yourself into. Aftermarket grilles are available on ebay or at performance products.

i have an '89 300te with 200k. it could be a great deal if you are mecanically inclined and have the patience to fix some of the systems on this vehicle which are notorious for needing repair at that mileage. the parts can be a little tough to find at a good price.
those systems have been noted in this thread. they can cost you big money for a dealer to repair.
i am very happy with mine, even after repairing ALL of the sytems outlined in this thread myself. i could not have justified spending the kind of money that a benz dealer would want for these repairs.
the problem using a non-mb mechanic is that these systems are specalized and i personally would not trust anyone but myself or a trained mb mech to do the work.
