To 4matic or not to 4matic...well you get it

When I mentioned that I might replace my 400E with a 4matic w124 some of you mentioned that it might not be a wise decision... is this true? The car I want has only 89k on the ticker and it is a 92. I would really like to get a 4x4.
Anyone have any personal experiences pros or cons?

thank you for your responses

Do you have $3+K to spend on a replacement transfer case?
If so, go for it!

If you want a reliable, affordable 4X4 then you need to go into 98+ W210 territory or jump into a Subaru. The early 4matic is labor intensive and pain in the ass to work on. Its a shame that the current 4matic is fooling people into getting the early 4matic.

I would get a good regular W124 and spend the money on sourcing out an LSD or something. What about a 94 with ASR?

If you DIy I wouldn't touch a 210 w/ a 20 foot pool..I hate working on those things...plasticy and cheap...blech..everything is packed like a sardine can to boot.

210's also like to rust.

w/ 82K you need to check that the transfer case has been serviced Regularly..if not it will be time for a new one in the next 15-30K.

Thanks, I think I will just get a 2wd with ASR and snow tires and keep some cable chains in the back.
