I'm having an issue with starting that has increased in frequency over the last few weeks. My mechanic was getting an EGR code a couple of times this summer, but not always. Had new O2 sensor (that kept popping up) and fuel cap. He told me to drive it and see if anything else really deeloped. Everything has been fine except a few of these starting episodes. I will turn the key and I have plenty of crank but no fire. Then I'll turn the key off and it will do it again. Then it will fire on the third time (or not). Basically, this is a terrible way to live and I don't want to kill my car. I used to expect it as a possibility when it was scorching hot outside, but now it is cooler and I'm getting it now and then.
So I'm trying to get some advice before I go to get robbed. I'm away from my hometown, so my options are an indie, whom I know little about but is supposed to be fair, or the dealer, and I just worry about going there and getting taken to the cleaners with a bunch of labor that I don't need. Based on my research on this site, I think that a carbon clog in the EGR line or a bad valve may be the culprit...I'm hearing the fuel pump kick on and it is starting much of the time. Anything you can give me would be great.
