Fault code clearing/limp-mode issue

We haven't had our car very long and very early on experienced a strange intermittent problem that I thought was the transmission and posted here. My mechanic said he thought it could be the kick down button sticking. I recently purchased the Benltley 124 Bible and found a reference to the Electronic Accelerator system on page 262. Stupid me did exactly what the "CAUTION" box warns about. I think that we have been experiencing the "limp-mode" thing.
How does "limp-mode" present itself?, and is it expensive to have the fault codes cleared? Has anyone else had this occur?
Thanks,
Curt
