W124 Tuning

Hey dudes, wassup,
I have a 1994 Mercedes Benz E320 and I really want to tune the crap out of it. Right now it has the I-6 which doesn't have as much power as I would like. Under acceleration the car doesn't give you that pinned in the seat feeling and the car rolls around too much in corners.

My plan for it right now is to drop the 500 motor into it from the 500sl or a E500. I was wondering if any of you have information on that conversion. I know that its possible, and I;m gonna get some serious power out of it but I want to know how much cutting or molding i'll have to do in the engine bay.

I was also wondering what type of suspension to go with for this car. I want some really firm suspension that will lower the car quiet a bit. I was wondering if there are any coilover kits, of strut spring combinations out there for the W124. I want an almost race feel with really firm suspension and very little body roll.

Another definate change that i want to make the benz is to but a manual transmission into it. I know that renntech makes the 6 speed transmission for the car but i know that the eurospec w124 models, and car like the 300ce had the 5 speed in them. I was thinking that i could a 5 speed imported from europe and make the conversion.

Let me know if you have any information on any of these things.

Thanks dudes

RE: W124 Tuning

500 motor wont fit without using the entire front clip etc from a donor car.... Go buy a 500, or you could always turbocharge or supercharge your I6 like the bimmer and toyota motors.

Get H&R springs with heavy duty bilsteins and you will like the outcome, I love my suspension. However I haven't gotten to the swaybar yet.

Tranny, manuals aren't defiant, they just weren't offered to lazy american drivers. I converted my w108 chassis to a 4spd on the floor and it became an entirely different car! I've also thought about doing it to my 400E as well but paint is priority. You can probably use the pedal assembly from a 190E manual car, and they aren't that rare like a 124 manual. If not try a parts yard in europe for those things. I know we have a manual 190E at work, i was thinking of doing this too as a 6speed would be sweet for controling all the power of my 4.2l v8.

RE: W124 Tuning

Would the donor have to be a 500e. Cause I've seen the conversion done before with a 500sl motor. Then engine mounts matched up perfectly, but the bay needed to be modified slightly. The battery was moved to the trunk also other than that it had the same basic e320 chassis

Theres an old saying that goes like this..."you cant make chicken soup out of chicken $hit". In other words, go out and buy a fairly maintained 500e for $15k or so. you will have everything youre looking for as far as power, susp, not to mention appearance which you dont consider in your posting. that 500e is a car whos road presence will NEVER die and ALWAYS hold its own and not be duplicated again. Put that 300 in the paper this weekend and send er down the road....PRONTO!!

You are trying to turn an E320 into something it's not.
Sell it and go buy a Subaru WRX.

There's always a E420 or E400 [;)] They are plentiful and the sticker won't kill you! That 4.2 will plant yer butt in the seat ![:D] Does mine![:D][:D][:D]If you got some extra cash burnin a hole in yer wallet you can do what I did and change to heavier sway bars and good shocks! Mine in the shop now being fitted for just that and if my ride height is up I might pop for some springs! I love these cars but I found out you start messin with them you can open up a serious can of worms! And spend some serious bucks[:(][:(][:(][:(]

RE: W124 Tuning

If we are seriously, its senseless to put an 5.0 into a 320E Chassis!!! The Transplantation is more expansiv than the whole 500E or 420E!

Go get an 420E or 500E!!

But if you have a Coupe, than its cool!

RE: W124 Tuning

beside engine you have to change
- the whole electrical sistem
- rear diff
- suspension
- brakes with the hidraulic pump and ABS
- gearbox with all the connecting shafts
- fuel pump
- exhaust manifold
- the entire cooling sistem
- and many others
[:D][:D][:D]a lot of hard working.

It is better to ask first then do it.

RE: W124 Tuning

400E is your best bet. You can tune these motorcars to over 300hp easily. It will perform the same if not better than an 500SL

E320 3.2 W211
E55 5.5 W211
500E 5.0 W124
190E 2.3 W201

RE: W124 Tuning

I would agree, it would probably be more cost effective to find a nice V8 than try and make an E320 into an E500.

My car has a 3606cc engine from the C class and this fits easily as it is still an M104.To do the job properly though, brakes, suspension all need to be modified.

W124 manual gearboxes were not particularly great in terms of being quick or comfortable and the auto is a much superior bit of kit.
