1994 E320

Hi, I'm new here. I just checked out a 1994 E320 this evening and I have a few question for you fellow memebers.

1)Does all the E320 come with traction control?

2)What is the difference between Elegance and the base model?? and how can you tell the difference?

3)The owner has all MB service record, can I call up the dealer and pull the file or I have to go there in person. I want check if the wire harness and the head gasket has been replaced in the past or not.

4) If they have not replaced in the past, does that mean FOR SURE I will have to spend the money on that in the coming future?

5) Also is it worth it to have the pre-purchase inspection by the MB dealer or I can have it done by the inpendent garage??

The car is in good condition and only have 110km. Looking forward to your reply. Thanks in advance.

1). No
2). Sounds like trim level; I don't think the mechanicals are much different.
3). Ask the owner: "Have you replaced..." And if you don't get a good feeling in your gut, ask for receipts. German car owners for some reason love to keep their receipts (even though it is embarassing when you trade to see how much money you've spent keeping the car on the road).
4). As with all german cars, especially so with 10 year old ones, preventive maintenance is key. "You can pay me now or pay me later". We all play the game of "what needs replaced next"?
5). I like independents. - go to the Yellow Pages and find someone who will go over the car for an hour's shop time, and be prepared to pay $100 for a really experienced indy with a good reputation.

Go for it!

RE: 1994 E320

Thanks guys,
The car has replaced the head gasket sometime ago but not the wire harness, but the guy has no time for the pre purchase inspection, is it still worth to buy? What other big item will come up in the future? Let me know.

Thanks again.

The car is asking for US$9600 with 115km. What other major compontent I should check out as I can go through the service record to see. But again, I don't know I should take the risk or not.

$9600 for a 94 320 sounds a bit pricey to me![:(]Thats a pretty good buck for a 11 yr old car.[:(]It better be pristine and lot of records.JMO [;)]

RE: 1994 E320

I just paid $8300 USD for a 95 E320 with 109K miles. It has all the records, head gasket, wiring harness, water pump and a bunch of stuff done. Drove it 1400 miles home without any problems. I was wary of all the cars with 80K miles on the clock - I think that's a when a bunch of stuff normally goes wrong.

Good luck - hope you find something - they are awesome cars!

I think it might be me. I have had my 1995 E320 for 7 years and now I have 86K miles. I just had to replace the water pump, kickdown actuator, and the Boden cable, but I have not done the head gasket or the wiring harness. My car has been very good for the past 7 years, but I am starting to think I am in for it now.

For one thing, the last two repairs left me feeling like they were not fixed properly.

1. My temperature has been about 95 degrees Celsius ever since they replaced the pump, flushed the system, and replaced the thermostat. Before the fix, my car ran at about 85 degrees Celsius. I don't like the fact that the operating temperature has increased. I think I may try to find a different thermostat. It bugs me that they "fixed it" and now my car runs HOTTER!

2. After they fixed my kickdown actuator, the sir conditioning didn't work. They fixed it with a charge, because they said it was a little low, although nothing was wrong with it when I took it for service. Now I realize that the idle is a bit rough or maybe it is a little low. When I start the car, it seems a bit choppy and then it bucks a little (a slight uneven rocking feeling) when I am in reverse at idle speed. The car seems smooth at everything but idle, so I am not sure if it is just some kind of an adjustment that was messed up. I guess another thing that bugs me, about this most recent fix, is that there were no symptoms except for the check engine light. I never noticed any problems with the kickdown, but I spent quite a bit of money and now I have the idle bucking issue. They "fixed it" and now I have a little problem AGAIN!

Don't get me wrong, I think the dealer really is very good, but I am wondering if the car may start to be "too troublesome", now that it has a few more miles. I hope nagging little issues and frequent trips for expensive repairs don't erode my confidence in my W124 and undermine my pleasure of ownership for this wonderful car.

RE: 1994 E320

Does these car has any rust issue?? I think there is a rust spot under the trunk lip and rocker panel from the rear passanger side door. Is this common? I think the car is a little over price to me, although it has all the MB service record but the wire harness has not been fixed. I will see if I can bring the car to do the Pre-purchase inspection or not, if not, I will pass this time. What do you guys think?

RE: 1994 E320

Yes, there can be rust. You have to look very close. I passed on a few with rust spots. Look around the antenna and lower part of doors and around trunk lock and where licence plate goes. The price is too high, the market is down on these car right now. It took me a long time to find my car. I got my 95 E420 with 78K for $8400. I think I am due for the wiring harness, but holding out as long as I can. You should be able to ge a really clean E320 for no more then $8000 and even a little less if you are patient. Good luck they are worth the wait.
