My old 300E uses too much oil to run synyhetic. I just run Castrol 20W 50. My V8's get the good stuff(Mobil 1). The oil consumption is from blow by from old worn piston rings. The engine has 218k miles and uses about 1 qt. every 500 miles of high speed highway driving(115-135 mph.) City use doesn't use any extra oil.
Redwood, have you run a compression test? It could be a mere case of dried out valve seals. My car used to drink as much oil as yours, and a valve seal job took care of it.
The motor does'nt consume any oil under normal city driving and does'nt smoke at all at any time. Only when driving on the motorway with high revs. (4500 to 5500 rpm's) that is how I know it is blow by. Worn rings make themselves known at high revs. and high speed. Thanks for the input Shady..
my 1989 300E revs apprx. 3500 at 70-75 mph. The L-six cylinder E series used a rear differential gear ratio mechanically higher than the V-8' manufactured during the same time period in order to provide adequate acceleration given their lower torque. I would imagine the newer V-6's have torque comparable to the older small displacement V-8's? My 1987 300E runs the same rpms at cruise speeds.
