I am going to change the engine oil for the first time. This car is "new" for us ('92 E300) but it has 115K miles and I am wondering what to use? It is going to be Mobil 1 synthetic but I do not know if I should use 10-30, 10-40 or 20-50 becase of the mileage; Also, if you could recomend an oil filter. Thanks for your help.
Mercedes, BMW, and Volvo like 15W-50 100% synthetic. But from what I hear, only use synthetic if synthetic was used from the start, because apparently synthetic oil will cause leaks because it has lower viscosity. Conventional oils are pretty advanced by now, there's really not much difference, as long as you change it every 3000 miles. I use Castrol High Mileage in my 300E [:D]
Try to determine the current oil from records, if not follow the temperature chart in the manual. Unless your in a very hot or cold climate, 10-40 20-50 will work fine, remember these oils are made to get the best mileage and lubrication at start up.
They break down a bit quicker than single viscosity oils like a w 30 w 40 . If you haul a large load on hills at higher RPMs with a smaller engine regularly, w30 - w40 according to temp.
So Florida is a very hot climate. Either of these oils will work, escpeially since you've decided to use synthetic. Which is best?... there are lots of opinions. If you do a lot of long distance driving, 20W-50 would be my summer choice. If you drive short distances, go with the lower viscosities to help with startup and warmup.
Don't let the mileage fool you. Treat it like a low-mileage engine.
I do recommend using a fleece-type oil filter (but I don't think one is available for your engine) rather than the regular type. It's more expensive and is designed to trap more contaminants and stay with the engine longer, as with an engine that runs on synthetic. Otherwise, you should consider changing a regular oil filter every 6K when using synthetic.

My e420 gets 20W-50 in summer and 10W-40 in cold NE winter and it starts and runs great everytime.
car's been religiously maintained that way since new (have all the receipts). Since this is the best used car i've ever owned the other two are getting the same thing
The Porsche has 10-40 Castrol GTX now and same with the Ford Escort. I will definitely put 20W-50 in the Porsche in summer but not sure about the Ford...

Use Oil which one is best for your car - Mobile1 0W40
If your engine is burning - good luck - To heavy Oil no good - you are loosing power
and don't mean is good for that engine.
This Oil 0W40 - is the best Oil at this time and is recommended by MB.
This Oil out perform conventional Racing Oil 20W50.
Now we know what we are talking.Milege dont means nothing - how was used - this be the picture of your engine.
Best thing is to consult the owners manual and ask the dealer. My E320 has 120k and it's had 15W-40 Pennzoil since day one. I'm the second owner and here on the virginia penninsula it gets pretty hot in the summer(high humidity)down to 27 degrees in the winter. No problems whatsoever.
