I have a 93 300e. When I start it in the morning I hear a weeeeeeeeerrrrrrrr coming from the engine. After a few minutes of running it is gone. Does anyone know what this is?
I was told that the Poly Belt needs replacing, could this be the source of the noise? What does it cost to replace a poly belt? also are there any other items I should have replaced (because of duplicative labor) while they are replacing the poly belt?
I think I may have the same problem. I hear the noise while sitting in the cabin. It seams to come from behind the glove box. Almost sounds like radio static. Is this familiar?

In may be your Air pump. The Air pump cuts in at start up. Its connected to the drive belts by a clutch which could also go bad.
It could also be that your belt tensioner has failed so your belt is loose and squeels on cold start.
Noise behind the glove box could be the tiny fan motor for the interior temp sensor opening located next to your interior light switch.
Sitting in the drivers chair look up next to the interior light on/off switch. You should see a vent. The fan pulls interior air into that vent to the sensor that adjust the climate control. The fan is located behind the glove box to the right.
Thanks to all for responding. My noise sounds like it is in the front of the engine compartment, not near the glove box (which my car doesn't have a glove box). Will check the belt and air pump.
