What do you plan on getting after you sell the W124?
How bad is your gas mileage. My 300E used to give me about 15-17 mpg (city), with my lead foot. Now my Chevy Monte Carlo SS gives me 13-14 city with my lead foot.
Bad gas mileage could be:
Air filter
Dirty Throttle plate
Dirty injectors
Bad air/fuel mixture
or something more simple such as new vacuum lines, and vacuum rubber.
Mileage shouldn't be too big of concern, but if you really feel it's bad. Then it's your choice.
Mike, you're milaeage stinks, and so does your overly huge avatar, try to fix that.

That is exactly what I'm getting.. 15-17 not really good for everyday car... My 190E gets a little better. I'll sell it if I get a good offer. If not I'll just keep it in the garage and drive it once a week.
A properly maintained M103 SHOULD return at least 19 to 20mpg in the city. I have 212k on the clock and still see 25-26 mpg highway. It has a lot to do with running gear.
