Like I said in the earlier post, the thing gives only lukewarm air at best, and intermittently. However, I've found that when the dials are set to defog, only the right-hand top vent gives hot air. The left hand one blows only cold air at the windshield. Now what's up with that? It was raining cats'n'dogs in Jeddah a couple of nights ago, and the windshield got all fogged up. I could only clear the right side of the dash, but the left side in front of me was all opaque!
The fact that I'm actually getting hot air means that there is no blockage in the core, but there seems to be a problem with air distribution. Or am I getting it all wrong??! [xx(]
Then your problem must be the actuator (vacuum diafragm) of your side. I think you´ll probably have to take out the instrument cluster and see if it lies there or (I hope not) entire dash to get there and change the vacuum operated diafragm.
Let me know how things go.[;)]
This is really strange. Here's what happens exactly:
The auxiliary electric pump is working. Coolant is circulating fine. It goes out from the cylinder head and into the firewall through the single hose, hot. it comes out from the other side (right behind the battery) through the dual hoses and into the control valves, which are working fine (I checked), and they come out COLD! But there simply isn't any heat inside the car. It seems that there is a steady flow of coolant from cylinder head ===> heater system under dash (hot coolant)===> from system to valves (COLD!!!!!!) ===> electric pump ===> main water pump.
Now, if there is no heating inside the car, why is the water coming out cold on the other side??????
If the system is recirculating coolant, then the only explanation is that is not circulating ENOUGH coolant to warm the car and to get hot coolant in the out hose.
Clogged? Bad pump? Valve not fully open? Control giving wrong signal?
Well, surprise surprise!
I've taken the car in to the dealer this morning, and it turned out that there was another piece of a hammer's handle stuffed into another hose, which I didn't spot. Now they're changing the hose and doing a checkup to find out if there was any good reason why the system had been clogged off (leaks, etc.), and if I'm lucky (which I'm usually not) I'll be getting the baby back today (but I will be paying a lot of riyals for this!)
Well well well! They only replaced the blocked hose. I had to pay only 320 riyals. That's about 80 dollars, folks! [:)]
Now the heater can melt iron! Yeppeeeee I have true climate control [:D]
Good deal, Im glad it worked out for you.
MBZ climate control issues can get complicated.
I have found that an old or failing push button/dial control unit can cause all sorts of strange occurences. Could you describe the vehicle you were talking about. I didn't know that they made a 87' 300E with dual zone climate control.
Redwood, what were you doing in my heater hoses? [:D]
Yes, my car is a 1987 300 E, and it does have dual temperature controls. Now with the heater and A/C both fixed to MB specs, I have full climate control [:)]
I can get red-hot air on one side of the dash, and freezing-cold air on the other - and I tried, and it works! [8D]
Now I left the dials set to 22C (with the * button pressed), and the temperature stays at that, day and night. During the day when it's hot, the A/C works until the temp is brought down to 22, then it disengages, and only kicks back in to maintain that, and during the night when it's cold (and it does get cold here in Jeddah at this time), the heater kicks in to warm the car up to 22 [:)] amazing!
