Changed the timing chain in my 1987 230E but.......

A couple of days ago, we changed the timing chain and fitted a new one. I have since noticed that upon starting in the morning, there is an audible chain rattle that dies away after a few seconds. There is also an occasional rattle when gradually powering the vehicle from low speeds of around 40 – 50km. When we were tightening the tensioner, we tightened it to the end, then we loosened it by 22.5 degrees. We loosened it because we were worried that tightening it to the need would make the chain too tight and thus make it break prematurely. My question is, should we further tighten the chain to the end? Should we have changed any of the sprockets as well? (Unfortunately the mechanic who did this was not too sure).
