I am looking to buy an E420. I am in love with this car (talking about the w124 body)but as far as reliability I need to know what is better. Also talking about money I can see that 1996 it cost somehow less than 1995.Also the 1995 cost more when new...about 8K.So I am inclined to get the e420 1995.
I got a "white beauty" 60K miles in excelent condition for around $13K. Whay do you think guys?
Also what shoud I look as far as trouble spots. I know the truoble spots for 300e 2.8, what else I shoud add to those?.
I don't believe they made the E420 in 1996, but they did in 97. I just bought a 95 E420, and I was tempted by the 97's because as you point out they are very close in price. The research I did found the 97 to have more electrical gremlins, and some seem to think that body style is the start of lower build quality for MB. I choose the 95 for the classic body style and solid build quality. With that said if I had found a nice 97 I would have gone for it. The wiring harness is an issue, but I have a feeling it has been more of an issue in warm climates then in the midwest and East, but that may just be wishful thinking.
Like Nathan I also have the 95 E420 and like Nathan I too am in love with this car! It is a awesome machine! I now find driving is fun again and anytime I can get behind the wheel I do! I call it a old mans hot rod! I just did my first oil and filter change and put in new metalic brake pads! Got real tired of cleaning the black off the wheels after 30 miles!!![:(!] Was not a bad job once I figuired out it was a 4 piston caliper "DUH" ![xx(]
I am not sure about this one, but didn't the newer e420s have the environmentally-friendly paint? People have complained about peeling and cracking under the clearcoat about that one.
What is the history with head gasket in those cars. Also I know that are some cars with ignition coils on the cilinder head and other with distributor.engine 119/981 and 119/975.
How is the overall reliability, I am ready to buy 94 or 95 you guys just made my desire for w124 a lot stronger.
If I could find a Starmark'd 1997 E420, I would probably rather have that than the 95 E420. However, I do find the W124 to be prettier inside and out [|)]
The W210 420 is more comfortable, handles better (I'd think), roomier, has the distributorless M119 V8, 5-speed transmission (better performance), auto up and down windows, etc.
honestly, I don't mind going to a W210 E420, if I can find one in equally good condition as mine [;)]
and the one with sport package is particularly sharp looking! [^]
Yes, you are right. I looked at several that were very badly rusted. So, I would look closely for that. I looked at a few nice low milage 210's, but the price was much higher then my 124. The ones that are priced low have high milage and paint bubbles. I saw several 210 with around 85,000 miles for around 13,500, but I wound up paying 8,400 for my 124 E420. So price was a factor for me. But a 210 all AMG'ed out is one fine car.
Yes you are right but an 210 is not an 124(what I recomend)the picture you can see below. It`s gold, if i could find a car like that i would pay cash for it.
