I've found that to get the best kickdown response from my 300E, the throttle and transmission cables have to be adjusted "properly" (that is, to me, of course, but I could be wrong. Here's the procedure I did:
1. Take off the air filter
2. Slacken the throttle cable until it's completely loose.
3. Re-tighten until the accelerator pedal inside the car moves only 2mm before it actually moves the cable. (You have to feel this by hand, not by your foot.)
4. Back at the engine, remove the linkage return spring.
5. push the throttle linkage assembly as if accelerating, then gently let go, making sure that it doesn't go back to fully released position. (Do this BEFORE applying lubricant to the linkage and pivots.)
6. Now, slacken the transmission cable using the plastic adjustment nut, until you see little the rubber boot bending.
7. With the throttle linkage not back into fully released position, slowly remove slack from the transmission cable. Go all the way until the cable itself pulls back the throttle linkage to the fully released position UNDER ITS OWN TENSION.
8. Restore the throttle return spring back into place.
9. Install air filter and enjoy the responsiveness [:)]
Disclaimer: Of course, this procedure could be all wrong, but it works for me. If it doesn't work for you or causes damage, don't blame me [:D]
I look at the shift points, my e320 kicks into the next gear as low as 2500 rpm while on flat ground ,but floored it will hold till 5000- 6000 to shift .All while keeping the idle at 550 hot to 800 - 1200 cold.
That's interesting... I think my kickdown cable must be dammaged or "not hooked up"... If I floor my 300E it will shift at roughly 2,000 rpm reguardless of how far down the throttle is depressed.
Here are some pics concerning how I adjusted the throttle and transmission cables on my 300E for best possible response (for me, that is):
Pics 1 & 2: Slacken the throttle cable and re-adjust until there is only about 2mm of play in the accelerator (felt by hand.)
Pic 3: Slacken the transmission cable all the way in.
Pics 4 & 5: Detach the throttle return spring and re-adjust the transmission cable until it pulls the linkage back into fully released position "under its own tension." Reattach the throttle return spring.
AWESOME!!!! I fixed my tranny kickdown problem... Saved myself 250 bucks doing it myself... Thank's so much for those pictures, it seriously helped alot.
