Thanks Six Wheeler I know this is an old post but the information and pics were right on the money. I adjusted my 89 300E and am impressed. everyone should do this.
Hi guys, interesting stuff. I tightend the cable and the car wouldnt shift down to third or second manually when at speed so I loosened it a bit. A bit peppier now. According to those pics, im assuming you have an M103 engine? Because I checked both my 300TE's and there is no spring there. Im wondering if the spring is missing in both or do you have a 300E 2.8 which would be a M104 which might be different again?
WAW Adeline! After all these years, I'm glad I'm still useful!
63, The cable shouldn't be "tightened", but it shouldn't have undue slack. I'm still unsure if the procedure I described applies to the M104, but go over it again. The point is not to have slack in the transmission control cable. Too much slack and the downshifts upon kickdown will be tardy. Too much tension and the tranny won't shift at all!

Thanks for your reply, but do you know if all M103 300E/TE have that spring described in the picture? I have 2 300TE's and they both dont have the spring!
You're just like me - when you love something, you love it so much you gotta have two (see my signature)
It should be there. It's the "return" spring, i.e. it helps the cable and lever return to the idle position. The spring tends to break and fall off with time and mileage. It should be cheap, so get one - or two
