RE: Speaker Sizes on W124 E220 Cabriolet 1995

I have a 200 saloon, and Im guessing the speakers are the same size..

I think the fronts are 4" or just under (maybe 3-3/4") and they are custom pioneer coaxials that clip into the top of the dash rather than screw/bolt in. I replaced these with some 10cm kenwood components; I wanted to retain the std speaker covers and these were the lowest profile, other than that, only MB Quart ref. series speakers would fit without modification, but they didnt have an active cross-over like the kenwoods, and were £175 vs. £100.

In the rear the speakers are 4-3/4" and again have a plastic custom mounting collar which is pretty poor... I replaced these speakers with some 5" Infinity co-axials to get some lower mid-range into the equation (the kenwoods are really nice sounding, but are a bit weak in the lower registers). They fitted ok in behind the std. covers, however I removed the plastic clip in collars (which vibrate) and made some MDF collars to replace them. I screwed these in from under the parcel shelf in the boot, then screwed the speakers down onto the collars.

Before I fitted the speakers I also splashed out £25 on some dynamat sound deadening to put around the mounting area of the speakers (they sell it ready-cut). This makes a lot of difference to the sound quality. I also replaced all the std. speaker wire with some fatter (about 5mm diameter) OFC speaker wire from a local Hi-Fi shop. Speakers in the car are powered by an alpine V12 4-channel amp.

In the boot I have a 12" sub in a 1/3 meter cubed box, driven by a bridged 2-ch 400w amp. All of this is powered from a 0-gauge power cable direct from the battery... The whole boot area is covered with Dynamat extreme, which totally deadens all of the pannels and keeps the sound in the car. Im running a pioneer MD head unit, cd-changer and a hard-wired 20gb iPod. Its set up to give good sound quality rather than be deafening, but theres plenty of power there when needed!

Hope some of this helps

b :)
