I run a '92 320TE. Head done. New core in the radiator. 'nuff said. Normally it runs in the high 80's low 90's (a tad warmer than my old 230TE but not much). But when I started towing with it the temp went North of 100 and showed no inclination to come below even in what passes for summer in the North of England.
Worried? You betcha. Checked out everything. All OK. Eventually spoke to Mercedes Benz UK. Now they were cool.
No problem, says the man on the phone. 110/115? Don't worry, the fan's only just kicking in on your model (complete with air con rad blocking the air flow through, but I digress)In fact don't worry even if it hits 120.
The man assures me it's built to take it. Question is, is my nervous system. I don't think that's pressurised to 130.
Anyone else had this fun?
Apart from that the car's a joy. Biggest problem is with the right foot!
By 120-125C the auxilary fan should definitely be on. If it is not then something is wrong. Could be you just have a bad thermostat and it is sending the wrong temperature. Check that out, then if the auxilary fan still is not on by 120C get another opinion from another dealer or independent about the auxilary fan.
Been there! Checked that! New thermostat in. Fan comes on. Just runs v warm. In 26C ambient with a full load (two adults, two very large teenage boys, 11 year old daughter and two small dogs) and the 'van on the hook I took my brave pills and hit the M'way.
When I was younger I used to talk about 110/115 and mean MPH, now it's degrees C! Temp went up there, but didn't go any higher. Even came down on the downhill stretches.
I guess like the man at Merc GB said, it's supposed to do that. Still terrifies me if I think to much about it.
Stark contrast to my old Range Rover which just sneered at a load and changes of ambient temperature. Mind you, the bits continued to fall off it in a way none of my Mercs have ever threatened despite their antiquity.
