I'm running 225/45/17s on my 300CE and 215/45/17s on my 260E.
with the offset that i'm running (same on both and i'm unsure what it is sorry. but i'll find out this week) the 225s will rub when pushed hard. i prefer the 215s but it is an unfair comparison as the 260 is sitting on an H&R Cup Kit suspension setup while the CE is standard. if you are into performance a good (make that very good) 215/45 will give your car great handling with the right suspension setup. with the H&R suspension and German Goodyear 215/45s the 260 will just start to understeer in a corner. but if you push it harder it will become neutral. and for the brave push it even harder and the car will shift to oversteer. but if just cruzin is your thing then there's nothing wrong with 225s.
Hello. I believe I have read every tire post in this forum and I'm still not sure what tires to get. I own '87 300E and I am looking to buy 17" SLK Class rims 7.5 x 17 ET 37. I like the classic look. As mentioned above, the 215/45/17 tires are a safe bet but the diameter is a little bit smaller than the OE 195/65/15. Someone posted a very helpful link that allows one to compare tire sizes... www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html, sorry I don't have the poster's name.
I would like to get 225/45 but I think I'm going to play it safe and get 215mm width tires. I am not planning on lowering the car at all nor modifying the fenders but I would like my new tires to 'fill the fender' a bit more. Is anyone using 215/50/17 tires? According to the tire size calculator, these would give me a slightly larger sidewall 4.2" and fill the fender a bit more yet stay with the safe 215mm width. The diameter is only slightly bigger so the speedometer reading would be only slightly off (61.2 vs. 60 mph).
Am I on the right path? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
245.35.17 in rear and 225.35.17 in front with CLK 209 AMG 5 spokes. Bilstein gas shocks (externally adjustable) and eibach lowering kit (with 18mm shims in front and rear - A2013251144, A2013211184)
im taking a horrible stab at this and guessing the speedo watches how fast the drivetrain is spinning ?? lol anybody anybody? bueller? blueller?

the speedo watches the wheels in the rear. when you can get a burnout, and it is possible, the revs jump and stay at redline, but the speedo raises the faster the wheels spin. going by the speedo alone, i've got a 0-60mph time of 2 seconds... and for those of you who ran larger overall diameters, your speedometer is probably wrong.
