Hey guys! I just changed the oil in my ’92 400E and the oil pressure has been acting really funny ever since I changed oil. So here’s how the story goes.
My car has always turned on and promptly shown “3 on the oil pressure gage. Usually when I would stop at lights and idle, it might drop down between 2 and 3. After changing my oil, it starts up from cold and jumps right back up there to 3 like it should. After warming up, it falls though.. first to 2, then to 1 and finally… when at idle or at low engine RPM, even 0. Only at about 2500 RPM will it get all the way back up to 3. Any time I press the accelerator under the 2500 RPM line, the needle will dip a bit and go start to go up as RPM’s go up. The oil level is fine and there don’t appear to be any leaks from around the oil pan or filter.. So I dunno what’s up.
What could be the problem?? I’m kinda stared to drive it all of a sudden and I’m leaving the country in a week so I don’t have time to get it fixed. Please help!!
Hmm.. The oil filter I just put in is a Mann which is Mercedes OEM as I understand. I put 10w-40 in it. I'm not leaving the country in my car, so I dont have to worry about that.... I'm more frightened that something bad will happen at the worst possible time (ie, going to the airport) you know?
I would suggest you change the filter again. That filter may be faulty. It could be blocking the oil flow. The marks on the indicator are calibrated in Bars. One bar = approx 15 lbs of pressure. New oil should give you 3 bar (45Lbs.) of pressure and drop to no less that 1 bar (15 Lbs) when warm and idling.
Many things can effect the pressure. Cam bearings are one of the things. I am not sure if Mbenz had a bypass in the oil filter base in case the filter stops up. I know some american made cars had this bypass. You should not allow the pressure to drop to Zero, you will eventually spin a main bearing and cause much more engine damage.[V]

I'd start by checking the oil level, make sure you're good there. Then change filters to a new filter to rule out a fault in the filter, then if the problem isn't solved, go to things like oil presssure sending unit, oil pump, oil pump chain, etc etc etc.

I'm gunna try to see if it's the oil filter. I dont have another oil filter on hand but I assume if I just take the oil filter out and run it without the oil filter for a little bit, I would be able to see if that's the cause of the problem? Anyone see any problems with running the car for a short (very short) period of time without the filter to check the pressure?
I cant imagine it would do that much... A lot of older American V-8's didnt even come with oil filters. It was just expected you would change the oil on frequent occasion. I might try if there doesnt seem to be any large concern.
