Whining fuel pump

My 1991 300 CE 24V Sportline is developing a noisy fuel pump. It's a steady whine and doesn't sound particularly pained.

I checked to make sure it wasn't fouling the body but the "silentblocks" seemed fine.

Any others have experience of similar or failure of fuel pumps?

The car's done a genuine 250K km (150K miles) and has had recent head gasket, cooling system overhaul, radiator, exhaust, fuel and air filters, plugs etc.

Basically, it goes fine but I don't relish the idea of breakdown.

Thanks in anticipation.

RE: Whining fuel pump

I understand it's common for a fuel pump to get noisier just before it gives up. They are consumable items. The brushes are formulated with a bit of abrasive and wear out with use.

RE: Whining fuel pump

My fuel pump is very noisy. Amechanic lokked at it and told me it was on it's way out but could not put a time limit on you.

The car runs fine so I intend to wait until it fails(hopefully I won't end up stuck in the middle of nowhere).

RE: Whining fuel pump

Thanks for your comments one and all.

I think I'll leave it for a while.

I'm based in France and my local man costs about £18 ($ € 25) per hour. I'm touring UK next week where MB charge £50 to £80.

Just my luck if it coughs off there!!!

Thanks again.
