I know what you're thinking, when will this guy write about something cheerful !
Well, my new wiring loom doesn't seem to have mended the problem and I now have a new ECU being obtained.
I am told that the short circuit has sent current in the wrong direction and damaged this component.
Do any of you technical members know if this sounds possible ?
My garage is one of the most respected independents in this part of the UK and I do trust them but I am interested if anyone else has had to replace this part
when the wiring loom failed.
By the way,my ECU is only available in Germany and will need to be made for the car.......££££££££$$$$$$
Unfortunately, that is a possible result of a faulty engine wiring harness. When these harnesses fail, the insulation on the individual wires becomes brittle and crumbles. This allows wires to short circuit to one another. Depending which wires short circuit determines the outcome. In certain cases it can damage the ECU.
As I have stated previously, I believe the engine wiring harness problem that affected many MB models around '93 to '95 was an unacceptable situation that DaimlerChrysler should accept responsibility for rectifying. At the very least owners suffer financial loss. I just hope that loss of life never results from a traffic accident resulting from a faulty wiring harness, a situation that could be avoided if DaimlerChrysler was to recall all affected vehicles and replace the harnesses.
It's a pity that the manufacturer of the great cars we love and promote gets it wrong sometimes and won't admit to it. It cannot serve to maintain their previous reputation of the manufacturer of the world's best cars.

Thanks, Greg, hopefully I'll get the car back in a few weeks. The ECU required is being made as a back order by Mercedes . Unfortunately it was about £1500 instead of around £750 for one from an E320.
Luckily I have found that my car had a mechanical warranty which has about a month to run and that will cover much of the cost !
