300E won't start

Just happened today. Can hear fuel pump a-buzzin, but will not engage starter. Already tried starting in Neutral (neutral switch problem). Didn't help. Could still be the problem. Other most likely culprit is starter relay, I suppose. Any other suggestions?
BTW, turned on lights while trying to start in case the starter was shorted or locked and didn't see the light's dim at all. Almost imperceptable noise when trying to start (quiet thunk). Bad starter relay?

RE: 300E won't start

Wiring harness possibly? I know I'm waiting for mine to expire. Do you have a updated OVP relay?

RE: 300E won't start

Try turning the car over in Neutral instead of Park. Currently with my car, it only starts in neutral because of a messed up Neutral Safety Switch.

RE: 300E won't start

Chupper,
Tried that already. Mentioned it in my original post. Am going to bang the starter with the handle of a hammer and see if it frees up the starter solenoid. I suspect that's the problem. Currently the car is outside because I'm repairng my 30 year old IH Cub Lo-Boy tractor in one half of the garage, and the other half has the 300SD in it.
Now if the wind chill would just rise a little above -10, I'd be fine.
Does anyone know how hard the Neutral switch is to get to in case I need to go after it?
Thanks, people!

you mentioned the starter relay, but what about the starter itself?

RE: 300E won't start

Woops, sorry, I'm worn down by life [:(]
I think I've heard that sometimes the neutral safety switch won't let the car start in Neutral or Park, so yea...

Other than that I can only infer its not the starter. It's weird that it would just die like that. But other than the fuses and the switch, I don't know what to say.

Good luck

RE: 300E won't start

By the master cylinder, there is a 3 wire plug. The center purple is the "S" terminal of the solenoid. Juice it up with a jumper from the + of the bat. If it cranks, the problem is with the ignition switch or the neutral safety switch. (unless you have an aftermarket alarm, 'cause they usually interupt the start circuit). If it did crank, make sure its in park, turn key to position 2,(all lights in cluster on)and crank. It will start. If it does not crank, its: dead bat, bad starter, or bad or loose connection.

RE: 300E won't start

Put +12 0n the purple pin (first did that on the socket and got nothing). I could hear what bust have been an attempt to pullin in the starter solenoid but, no-go. Ordered another starter from Importec.com. Will try (when I can jack up the car) to tap the starter to see if something's just stuck.

My stone driveway isn't conducive to jacking the car up and crawling under the car when it's 20 degrees with a 10 mph wind. I'm going to try to get it in the garage later today. Damn thing is heavy, though, and we're having a snow/rain/ice "event" now.

Thanks for the help!

RE: 300E won't start

Bad Starter confirmed. Found loose (-) terminal at battery after jump-starting. thought that was it. Car then left us stranded after a wedding on Sunday (it was a lot colder). Came back the next day and whacked the starter solenoid with the handle of a hammer (for reference purposes the starter solenoid sits on top of the starter on the left side of the engine just in front of and below the oil filter on the 3.2 engine). Engine started, I took it home and replaced the starter. Again for reference:
2 - 17 mm bolts hold the starter on; bottom one is easy to get to, top one takes a lot of patience[:(!]! The bolts go through the bell housing into the threaded holes in the starter.
1 - 13 mm nut and spring washer holds the large battery terminal on
1 - 10 mm nut and flat washer hold the solenoid lead

Starts beautifully now!
