I wish I could help with more specific information - the early 90s were pretty chaotic at AMG, all kinds of rumors going around, lots of secrecy about the MB deal - we were the last ones to know what was going on, usually read about it in the paper or in car magazines.
I looked through some of my old brochures, AMG still had their own price list for modifications in 1990 (published 06/90); the earliest date I found on the MB brochures is 08/91. I know that at some point Mercedes started sending us modified VIN plates for the cars that were sold through their dealers - same VIN, but different weight ratings etc. Also the tire pressure stickers were modified, and stickers added to the owner's manual.
So unless you can verify your car's MB-AMG heritage through the VIN, there is no way to know for sure if it was sold as an AMG car through MB or modified for an individual owner. Most of the cars that were modified in Affalterbach back then came brand new from the factory anyway, so IMHO there is not a huge difference.
BTW where can I find this Russian VIN decoder?
it will show everything in english. Peter , do you have any brochures and price list for the options you could order from the factory in 1992. I've been trying to find it for my vehicle , because it has a sportline interior, and a bunch of AMG options put on at the factory.
Thanks for the link - works as advertised.
There were different brochures for the 201, 124, 129 and 140s - the one for the 124 3.4 has pictures of the car, the engine, and some of the accessories, also some engine performance data; the one that has the price list covers AMG accessories available through the MB dealers in Germany (all German language, prices in DM - the good old pre-Euro days!) I had quite a few of these brochures, sold most of them on ebay a few years ago - I'll have to check what's left.
I finally got the green 4MATIC back on the road, after some damage due to a close encounter with a deer. Took the opportunity to convert it back to the original headlights.

1990 300TE 4MATIC 3.2 AMG
1991 300TE 4MATIC
2001 SLK 320
......and looking for a Unimog!
The 3.2 engine looks like any other M103 - no fancy badges back then. IIRC there used to be 2 stickers on the valve cover, one identifying the engine as a 3.2, the other listing recommended spark plugs, unfortunately they are gone now (previous owner probably blasted them off with a pressure washer). The exhaust manifolds on the AMG 103s were painted bright silver, but that never lasted more than a couple of years.
The only cars back then that got AMG VIN plates were the W124 V8 'Hammers' - the modifications were so extensive that AMG was listed as the manufacturer.
BTW, the 3.2 isn't all that quick off the line, especially in a 4MATIC - but around 3,000 RPM it really begins to pull, thats when I can tell the difference between the AMG and my stock 91.
A mother with two small children in tow, slammed into my 1993 300TE, leaving it questionable whether I should invest the $10,000 likely necessary to repair the damage to the pasenger dows, center post, running board and quarter panel. It was so stupid. Meantime, it's been tough finding a black 1995 300TE in decent condition here in the mid Atlantic area. I strongly dislike (read "hate") the body style of 1996-2003 wagons. So I'm having to consider a 2004. This model doesn't look quite as bad; but new cars are designed with that corporate look, where there's not much room to make modifications that individualize your car. The wrong modification could easily turn out to be inconsistent with the overall design.
I figure with a 2004, I can lower it a bit, tint the windows and add AMG ground effects. To do much more than that would be risky.
Anyway, if anyone is trying to sell a really top condition black 300te, and you're within 300 miles of the metro Washington, DC are. Give me a shout out. Otherwise, I'll let you all know what I decide on by month's end.
Here is our newest edition to the family, a 1991 300TE. I still cant get over the excellent condition I found her in. A credit to the previous owners...
