Can't find the previous pictures, sorry about that.
Sorting out a 1985 280TE basic trim, Schwarz Blau over blue leather. Kind of quirky, as basic trim with some luxuries: A.B.S. (oft forget to pump the brakes in a panic situation so glad for this super rare feature), Blaupunkt eight speaker sound system (amazing sound even with the absent antenna), factory green tinted windows, heated front seats (love them), leather upholstery, electric front windows (might convert to full manual), wood trim (except the shifter surround), but manual climate control, no center armrest, and only a non-lighted passenger mirror (oh well, use the rear view mirror to adjust my mustache ). For other options, has the cargo cover and net (able to replace the missing double roller), cargo tie-downs, and supposedly at one point, a fire extinguisher (no holes where it should have mounted). At some point got four Hella horns up front, the switch doesn't work, so not sure how set up.
She has all her service history, except a brief time in the early '90s and most of her receipts. Even notes a break in where the center console was damaged to get out the radio (probably what happened to the original unit) and shortly after, a Bosch alarm system (per the sticker) was installed, though now not connected (just a mess of wires and sensors, plus the siren). Also came with a North American owners manual and the Service book, full of stamps from a Frankfort dealer (which can't find). Also had documentation to a recent full head rebuild.
Purchased it for $1,000U.S.D. in Seattle, without checking in person. Figured could put in the 300TD-T driveline from the wreck (thank you old lady for not paying attention during rush hour traffic) and worse case, part out and at least break even. Only issues not disclosed was the flex disk was cracked and hadn't been driven for a while (regular 3,000 mile oil changes stopped in 2008). It was disclosed the automatic transmission leaked (found both plugs loose, though still leaked a little), broken antenna mast, front door rust and rear driver's side fender rust (not finding anything else so far), and broken odometer.
In regards to the odometer, tried fixing, but wasn't repairable. If someone has a K.P.H. 280 late speedometer, please let me know.
Drove her for about a month or two, then when my friend Tram said the unknown noise was a broken flex plate, saw it was indeed broken, took her off the road. Finally got my act together, bought a elephant jack, and just got the engine pulled Friday night. On the jack, a two ton extendable Viking made in the U.SA. probably a good 30 plus years ago. Seals did dry out and slow leak, though now not leaking down. But, only paid $95 delivered, which is a steal as around here, a fixed jack made in China goes for $200 used without delivery. Did make a few mistakes, but because was in a hurry trying to get it out by the time the shop closed on Friday (didn't think have access to a van this long). Thankfully, only couple items damaged, one because the electrical junction was rusted solid.
Transmission was dropped off Saturday morning. Shop had several vintage Mercedes transmissions and used by a Phoenix Mercedes indy, so should be good. Asked him to look over the unit and he call Monday with a diagnoses.
Now in the process of taking the rest of the way to a short block to find and fix an oil leak. One of those, since in here already, situations. Have the intake manifold off, the W.U.R., and the A.A.R..
The A.A.R. hose had about a cup, or about 250c.c.s of oil come out, then about half that in the unit itself. Is this normal?
Are these hoses available? The front one (I.I.R.C. as been a long while that been apart, goes to the manifold) had been pinched off with vise grips for years (quite rusted) destroying the hose. Plus, the vacuum nipple is broken off. Also, the pinch destroyed the part number, so can't do a simple search.
Trying to remove the oil filter hosing, got all the bolts out, but still not coming off. What am I doing wrong?
The reason am taking off is because one of the fittings seized to the oil cooler so cut it off rather than damage a N.L.A. even used part, the oil cooler hoses are not in good shape, and got good access now. Figured since can't get the hoses, will just take to a hose shop and have new rubber fitted. Tried taking off the hosing, but being a 3/4" fitting, can't get it off without damage.
Thank y'all in advance for any help!
P.S. Sorry, somehow the pictures loaded backwards order.
