Engine Oil for 230E

Hi All,

I will be acquiring my first MB a 1990 230E Auto Transmission Gasoline (Petrol) unit. It is quite well maintained by a mechanic currently. I would like to inquire whether if i can use mineral Engine Oil or is it a must to use Synthetics / Fully Synthetic for MB. The grade is 10W/40 right?
Thanks for the advise

10w40 or even 15w40 is perfect for this engine. Also, there is no need to use a full-synthetic on these relatively unstressed old engines; mineral or semi-synthetic is fine.

Check in your owners manual. At the back there's a recommended fluids section and a nice snazzy graphic that shows the relationship between the recommended viscosity of oil and the ambient temperature.

1992 190E 1.8 <=>2.0 201.018 => Daily driver

1981 300D (non turbo) 123.130 => Project car - stripped to the bone

1965 Land Rover Series 2a Station Wagon => CIS recovery therapy!

Free and legal FSM download => Ask for help if you get stuck!

Don't leave that there I'll take it to bits

a 1990 230E? i guess its an w124 then and not a w123, the m102 engine in those are very durable, keep an eye out on the temperature of the engine thou, seems to be what kills them over here atleast.

any oil would do just fine, as stated above, they arent exactly sensitive. a good 10w40 will do just fine in most places, but if extremely hot a 15w40 or alike isnt bad, and the other way 5w40 if you are in a much colder climate.
