Hi. Does anyone have a good picture or drawing of the valve adjusters? I am having trouble getting my head around the procedure. I must be missing something. Everything says the lock nut tightens against the adjuster. Is the lock nut also the spring retainer. I'm used to shims and rocker arm valve adjustments. Italian, French and English. If I could see the pieces in a picture or diagram it would help my brain engage and see the logic. Thank you.
Also, when I removed the cam cover there wee no washers, flat or wavy between the cover and the nuts. Are there supposed to be washers or just the nuts directly on the cover?
Sorry to keep coming back to this. Maybe this will help me understand. Where does the adjuster screw into? And, what is the lock nut connected with, in other words is it part of the rotator and actually locks the adjusting screw to that? Thanks for any help. I saw a post not undoing the jam nuts. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Stripping nuts and then a giant repair
So I think I am starting to figure this out. What I am actually doing is moving the valve height in relation to the retainer? I think I almost have it. I found a picture of a valve and the top is threaded versus other valves, other makes, that just have a fixed setting with the retainer and the adjustment is done on the rocker or by a shim size change to adjust the distance. Is this a correct assumption so far, anyone? It sure would be nice to see each piece individually because then I would truly understand the strong German engineering. Thank you everyone, as always. I am doing lots of little things to my new acquisition and having fun. Once the valves are set, now slightly tight and the new glow plugs installed I'll start tracing the electrical. The radio, A/C, one window. sunroof, and lock systems don't function so I'm looking forward to that project. Lastly it seems my climate control system is an interim system only used a few years before the third version came out which I can find a lot of info and not much on mine. As I progress I'll post the latest
The height of the valve doesn't change per se. It's the position of the jamb nut and top "nut" on the threaded end of the valve that changes to give clearance of the cam follower (or rocker as you might say) to the cam. The valve has keepers that fix the spring retainer, just like more common valves.
Good morning Mr. Carpenterman. Thank you very much for the explanation. My little brain is very happy with me now and I understand fully the German way here. . Have a great day
