Can anyone confirm if the 4-speed clutch disk found on the 716 series transmissions are the same as the ones found in the 5-speed 717.400 series?

Yes.

Most W123s used 10-spline clutch plates, but later ones used 26-spline clutch plates.

The 10-spline clutch plate (215mm) has the part number 0102502403 (among others) or Sachs 1861 792 235. The 26-spline clutch (215mm) has the part number or Sachs 1861 543 537 or 1862 365 032.

I believe the 5-spd was only 10-spline in the W123.

That is not the case. Later 717.400 also came with a 26 splined clutch.
I don't have the serial number range, but most often you find out when you open it up.

I'm glad you wrote, I've been reading old threads in which you provided great info:grin

I looked over my records and the clutch that I purchased new because the old one shattered is a Sachs brand but different part number: 3000297001.

I don't know which version it is, just want to confirm that I can use it in a 5-speed 717.400 transmission.

Also, if you were to do a swap from the 4-speed to 5-speed, can I reuse the same transmission mount/plate thats on the 4-speed with a 5-speed? If not, do you happen to have the part number?

I would also like to find the part number to a 5-speed shift knob but I can't find it, only been finding 4-speeds.

EDIT: I found the following info listed regarding my clutch, "SACHS 3000297001 Diameter [mm]: 228; Number of Teeth: 10". I think they are the same, but has a larger diameter than what you've written.

The W123 250, 280, 280E and M102-powered 230E used a 228mm clutch. The M115 4-cylinders, 2.0lt M102 and all of the diesels used a 215mm clutch. You don't mention what model you have.

The 5-speed knob depends on what shifter you have. See here.

There are 4 different cross members, from which you will need to find the right one for your car. I don't have the part numbers, but see here.

The Sachs kit number you state is correct for the 228mm, 10-spline clutch. The Sachs kit number for the 215mm, 10-spline clutch is 3000 079 002.

its a 1980 280TE AMG, listed in my signature

The shifter part number I need is the one seen in the first picture of your post

Based on whats written, I want to be clear about the part I am needing. If your're going from a 6 cylinder/with 4 speed manual (thats plate #2 in your list), I would need plate #3, which can also be found on a standard 240D with an automatic transmission?

The Sachs kit number you state is correct for the 228mm, 10-spline clutch. The Sachs kit number for the 215mm, 10-spline clutch is 3000 079 002.
Thanks

Yes, the cross member for the 4-cylinder with auto transmission will be the right length. Note that you will have to use the correct rubber mount for the 5-speed transmission, which is 1242400618. I had to grind away some of the webs to make it fit the cross member; to prevent that, you'll need to try to source the correct cross member, which is 1232422601. Then again, with a little bit of luck your engine will be longer than the 5-cylinder by just enough for rubber to fit on the bracket perfectly.

The cross member I used has the part number 1232420701.

The part number for that gear knob is 1232671110.
