It looks like someone cut and replaced the front part of the rubber trim with something from another car. On my wagon, the trim is the same size and continuous from the rear all the way down to the hood opening.
You aren't missing a piece, the rubber has just shrunk and broken apart. You can baby it or if you're into chasing wild geese, look around for a replacement, but the rubber and chrome are all one piece, expensive to replace and very hard to find.
I have an 84 and this happened to the passenger side.
Word of caution - you might want to make sure it's adhered really well, otherwise, if you're driving at high speed, the wind can whip it off. Happened to me and I was off the road quick - didn't want to lose the piece
