If I had a bottomless wallet and the space, I would harbor as many as I could find. Hundreds if possible. I think it would be cool to have the largest collection ever. That's what I'd do.
I've had four W123 diesels. As many as three at one time. My first was a very tired & rusty automatic 240D. Then four months later, I found a nice-running, but even rustier stick-shift example. Then a year later, my 5-speed Euro TD. I replaced the first two rusty ones with a nearly rust-free stick-shift 240D and I'm keeping the Euro TD, so I'm down to a manageable pair now.
(Of course, for now I won't go into all my other non-Mercedes vehicles.)
I recently bought a coupe, a 1984 230CE Manual Euro. It has a new engine and a new tranny. I will be restoring the interior and body. Then I will go hunting for it's twin brother, a late 300CD which I will paint the exact same color. One should have a manual as well as an automatic, a gas and a diesel.
EDIT: SOLD, all well, another can pop up any time.
